The Oostermoersche Vaart and Drentsche Diep are old names for the Hunze. The name Hunze was also used in the past. The monk and historian Beda (England, ca. 700) mentions the Hunze. The Hunze was initially used for the transport of peat to Groningen.
In the period November 1737 to May 1738, 311 ships crossed the Hunze.
On the banks there were places where peat could be piled. Such a piece of land was called a lent.
People were obliged to maintain the spring, which was periodically
controlled.
