The water tower has been for sale for years in vain. History and Zoetermeer have a difficult relationship with each other.

Water tower De Tien Gemeenten was built in 1927 to a design by architect A.H. Wegerif in collaboration with Delft professor C. Visser and architect A.H. Goldberg.

The assignment was given by the Drinking Water Supply Foundation De Tien Gemeenten. In 1921, at the initiative of Zoetermeer and Zegwaart, Ten Municipalities had developed plans for a water pipeline from the Wassenaar dunes. In order to get pressure on the pipeline, a container with water at a great height was needed and that became the water tower. The arms of the ten municipalities adorn the entrance. The tower was decommissioned in the early 1990s.

The municipal monument is approximately 45 meters high and rests on 324 piles with an average length of 14 meters. The water reservoir is located at the point where the octagonal shape of the tower changes into a sixteen-sided shape. The reservoir is made of reinforced concrete and has a capacity of 500,000 litres.

A destination for the building is still being discussed. Ranging from offices to a B&B.
