In the depths of the Zechstein, dissolved lime components as well as leaching of gypsum and salt layers led to the collapse of the overburden. An impermeable layer prevents the water from completely seeping into the sinkhole. The interaction between evaporation, rain and probably also inflows beneath the water surface leads to fluctuating high water levels. The water was only used as a bathing lake from 1926. It was the local schoolmaster who gave swimming lessons. Two years later, the school organized a public swimming festival with an evening torchlight and lantern parade - the “Denser Lake and Light Festival” was born. With the support of surrounding towns, various clubs, etc., the first bathing and changing house was financed. For many years the lake was the only swimming option in the area when the water level was sufficient. This only changed in the mid-1960s with the opening of the outdoor swimming pools in Sontra and Nentershausen. Literature tip: History and stories from the Richelsdorf Mountains, 2008, pp. 159–166.

Denser natural lake with an average depth of 13 meters. (Wikipedia)
The lake occasionally turns reddish, which was already mentioned in the church chronicle from 1604 and interpreted as a bad omen.
However, the explanation for this is more likely to be the large number of water fleas than the cause of the discoloration. Under certain environmental conditions, they changed their metabolic processes and produced an intense red dye that contributed to the discoloration of the lake.
The legend of Lake Denser, on the other hand, sees the solution to the puzzle as less scientific. According to her, young boys who wanted to force happiness in love are to blame.
At a church fair in Dens, three sea maidens rose from the water to take part in the merrymaking of the people. When they were ready to jump into the lake again “at midnight,” a muffled scream was heard. A young boy who wanted to hold her had “snatched” a glove from a girl. But she was not allowed to return to the moated castle without him. Despite a desperate search, she couldn't find the glove. So she jumped into the water without him. All you could hear was a dull hissing noise and a wailing sound. She had to lose her life. The waves of the lake turned blood red.
Never again did the virgins come out to share in the joys and enjoyments of men. But even today, when there is great war on earth, you can still see the lake turning as red as blood.
The legend can be read in full in the book “Around the Alheimer” (1982), among others.
