The only hilltop castle in the north of the German-speaking Community of Belgium. The tower dates from the 14th century, the other current buildings date from the beginning of the 20th century, when the Aachen cloth industrialist Nellessen had them rebuilt according to his wishes.

The castle is also popularly called "Emmaburg" because, according to a legend, Charlemagne's daughter Emma resided there. In the courtyard there is a relief that refers to the legend. The castle has been unused for several years and is for sale. Unfortunately, visits inside are currently not possible. The castle is a listed building.

      Legend:

In the 19th century, Hergenrath Castle was associated with the legend of Eginhard and Emma. According to this, Eginhard is said to have built a hunting lodge on the site of a hut in the forest in which he and Emma lived after their banishment from the court and named it Emmaburg after his wife.[3] The castle was later built on the site of the hunting lodge, but retained the name. A bronze relief in the castle courtyard, the work of a Cologne artist from 1906, shows Karl's daughter Emma carrying her lover Eginhard back through the snow to his chambers under the incredulous gaze of her father. In other versions of the legend, however, it is stated that the two Seligenstadt am Main were the home of the two.

The castle is also associated with the legend of the Hinzenturm. The Hinzenmännchen are said to have initially lived in a system of caves beneath the Emmaburg and haunted there at night. Only when, with the help of the people of Aachen, a chapel was built close to the rocks of the castle, whose bells drove them away, did they move through an underground passage into the cave system under the Heinzenturm in Aachen.

        Unfortunately, the new owner de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deutschsprachige_Gemeinschaft

is allowing the listed castle complex to fall into disrepair and no activities are apparent to prevent this.
