The municipality includes the districts of Elmenhorst with Bargerhorst, Siebenbergen and Scheidekate in the west, Fischbek in the east and Mönkenbrook in the south.
During the Second World War there was a prisoner of war camp in Elmenhorst and forced laborers were used on some farms. After the Second World War, the number of inhabitants rose sharply due to the influx of refugees. Since the 1960s, larger housing estates have been built on the outskirts and in the district of Elmenhorst in order to meet the growing need for housing in the decades that followed.
