The Manchester Ship canal is a 36 mile (58 km) inland waterway. It links Manchester with the Irish Sea. Construction began in 1887 and once completed it enabled Manchester to become Britain's fourth-largest port, despite being a considerable distance from the sea. Today the commercial use has declined as the ships have become larger, but there are plans for redevelopment.
