On the way through the German-Belgian border region of the "High Fens / Eifel Nature Park", hikers not only encounter beautiful nature, but also the signposts and information boards of the "Sentier du souvenir" ("Path of Remembrance"). This is a joint project connecting the borders, which - over a total length of 94 kilometers, mainly along the former West Wall - reminds us of the horrors of war and tyranny and reminds each generation anew to maintain peace (still a very important and, if we look at the east of Europe, highly topical concern).
Particularly striking (or rather: noteworthy) stations on this "Path of Remembrance" are marked with an information board - an invitation to pause on your own (life) path.

Information board 23 on the path of remembrance commemorates Jonny Nysten, who came to Hellenthal in 1946 as a Belgian occupation soldier. When the Belgian soldiers were recalled, Jonny stayed because he had met his partner Luise Pohl in the meantime. Like many Eifel residents in the post-war years, he tried to support his family by smuggling. On the evening of May 15, 1948, he and some of his friends were stopped by German customs officers and a scuffle broke out in which the unarmed Jonny Nysten was shot.
Later, the Eifel Association Hellenthal built a bridge for hikers in the immediate vicinity, which was called the "Jonny Bridge" from then on. Source: Information board on site.
