The place Playa Santiago (also Playa de Santiago) is in the municipality of Alajeró on La Gomera. The original small fishing village experienced its first boom from the beginning of the 20th century through extensive cultivation of agricultural products such as bananas and tomatoes, which also led to the expansion of local industry and infrastructure with canning factories and ports. With the decline of agriculture in the 1990s, there was a reorientation towards tourism. In Playa Santiago there is a pebble beach made of lava rock, as La Gomera is of volcanic origin. However, the sea currents hardly allow swimming in the sea, as it is far too dangerous for inexperienced swimmers due to the undercurrent. At the other end of the harbor there is a row of shops.
