The bog is alive again here. This time we were able to observe not only cranes but also redshanks, oystercatchers and lapwings.

The Goldenstedt Moor is a renaturalized raised bog. The "Haus im Moor" nature conservation and information center serves delicious cakes and buckwheat pancakes. The moor nature trail in front of it is highly recommended.

The approximately 640 hectare nature reserve is intended to permanently preserve the northern part of a former large raised bog complex (“Großes Moor bei Barnstorf”). Even if the current state is not yet optimal from a nature conservation perspective and peat extraction is still taking place in some parts, the areas have a high regeneration potential. The image of the area is currently largely determined by dwarf shrub, cotton grass and moor grass stages; on the edge of the moor there are also birch moor forests with moor grass and dwarf shrubs.

The protected area is already the habitat of communities typical of raised bogs. Particularly noteworthy are rare and very sensitive breeding birds (e.g. nightjar, common snipe or garganey) and guest birds (e.g. crane, Bewick's swan, whooper swan or bean goose).

Through protection-oriented management (e.g. by ending harmful uses and by rewetting), the value of the area for nature conservation will increase significantly in the future.

The NSG serves to protect the FFH area 055 "Goldenstedter Moor".

The Vechta district is responsible as the lower nature conservation authority.
