The Sanctuary of the Madonna del granato in Paestum offers a spectacular view of the Gulf of Salerno and is still a pilgrimage destination today. Apart from the notable presence of works of art, the Sanctuary is an example of how Christianity co-opted pagan elements. The divinity venerated in this same area was Juno and the pomegranate was its sacred fruit and it is no coincidence that the Madonna del garnet (or pomegranate) is venerated in the Sanctuary.
