The BOEZEGEMAAL Wisboom dates from 1868 and is built in Traditional-Handicraft style. The Wisboom pumping station was originally a steam pumping station that was built near Kinderdijk to strengthen the mills that provided the drainage of the Overwaard water board. The steam engine powered four paddle wheels. In 1924 the steam pumping station was replaced by an electric centrifugal pumping station of a considerably larger capacity, in which two electric motors were installed, each driving a centrifugal pump. The paddle wheels were then removed. The pumping stations were housed on the sides in new extensions. Because of these extensions, the house has a T-shaped floor plan. In 1953 a second electric pumping station was added. These were in use until 1996.

The pumping stations are located at the lowest point at Kinderdijk and discharge excess water from the Overwaard into the Lek.

The housing of the machinery is located directly next to a bridge and partly rests on foundations in the water. In the background, the Kinderdijk windmills form a beautiful and typically Dutch decor.

    Description

The 19th-century pumping station is built from a rectangular plan, with the floorless extensions from 1924, a T-shaped plan has been created. The pump house is built in red brick and has a concrete plinth; consists of one storey and a roof floor under a saddle roof covered with braised Dutch tiles with the ridge direction parallel to the Lekdijk. The pumping station is partly built on round masonry footings that are visible at the level of the water. A concrete walking edge runs along the left wall until halfway through the building.

The brick extensions have plastered plinths on which one storey under a flat roof.

All windows in the building are arched and have cast iron bars, concrete sills and roller layers. The entire building has a wooden gutter that rests on simple iron cleats.

In the center of the symmetrical front facade (east), a spout facade, a double wooden door with a round-arched fanlight with iron rods. On either side of the door is a window in a sunken masonry round-arched field, the edges of which are plastered. Above the door is a sandstone facing stone in which the name `De Overwaard' is applied; a round-arched window at the top.

In the right side wall (north) a plastered cartouche in which the year of foundation, the board members and the main entrants are mentioned. The plate is crowned with two wrought iron curls and the (current) coat of arms of the municipality of Alblasserdam. On both sides, light-rising pilasters crowned with stepped masonry blocks on which the gutters rest. In the extension there are three large and one small round-arched windows. In the old part of the right side wall two wooden doors that can be reached via a wooden bridge. Three round-arched windows on the right. One round-arched window on the left. In the left gable wall there are a total of ten iron round-arch multi-pane windows, five of which are smaller.

In the rear is a wooden door with a three-pane fanlight. This facade is accessible via a wooden bridge and a staircase which has been constructed from the right bank. To the right of the door is a half-arched window and along the gable edges wind struts with a wooden pylon on top.

The interior is original in layout. The centrifugal pumps, Pannenvis machinery, are installed in both extensions. In the former boiler house are the transformation room, the low-voltage room and a forge whose chimney and fire plate are still present. Wooden hood.

    Valuation

The pumping station is of general interest because of its cultural-historical value as a cool example of a nineteenth century pumping station with an important water management significance for the Alblasserwaard.

The pumping station is of general interest because of its architectural-historical value as a typological example of a recognizable pumping station with a recognizable appearance for the end of the nineteenth century.

The pumping station is particularly of urban and landscape importance because of its iconic location on the Kinderdijk, where the mills are an example of an older milling technique.
