The wasteland lies on the Mittlerer Aurach. In the west the forest area adjoins Baumgarten, in the northeast Tiergarten and in the southwest the Pfaffenholz. About 750 meters to the east lies the Winterleiten, about 750 meters south of the Neuberg rises.

The place is first mentioned by name in 1249 in a document in which the monastery Heilsbronn the purchase of the nearby field "Gereut" is confirmed. In 1532 he is mentioned as "Holtzmul". [4]

At the end of the 18th century there were two households in Holzmühle. The high court exercised the rule Wilhermsdorf. Both properties had the manor Buchklingen as landlords.

As part of the Municipal Edict wood mill was assigned to the 1811 formed tax district Buchklingen. It also belonged to the 1813 founded Ruralgemeinde Buchklingen. It was subordinate from 1815 to 1818 the jurisdiction court II. Class Wilhermsdorf, afterwards the district court market Erlbach. However, the voluntary jurisdiction and the police had until 1839 the patrimonial court Wilhermsdorf held.

On January 1, 1972 Holzmühle was incorporated as part of the territorial reform to market Erlbach.
