Hahnheide is one of the oldest nature reserves in Schleswig-Holstein. The forest area was placed under protection as early as 1938, at that time mainly to prevent an armaments factory from settling there. Hahnheide can be easily reached by car via Trittau or Hamfelde. Those arriving by public transport should take bus line 333 to the Trittau, Alter Bahnhof bus stop. From there it is only a few minutes' walk to the edge of the forest.
