The first written mention of a church on this site, just behind the thirteenth-century Waterlandse Zeedijk, dates from 1520. The - presumably wooden - chapel became a parish church in that year and was dedicated to Saint Cornelius, the patron saint of horned cattle . In 1609 the chapel was replaced by a brick church for the Protestant church service. Another major renovation took place in 1710, giving it its current form. Furnishings from 1659 and 1702 have partially been preserved. The church bell is from 1650. In 1858 the church received a two-manual organ.
