Here in the command bunker from the 1950s you can immerse yourself in the post-war period and feel the atmosphere of the Cold War. He was part of this system along with two other large underground bunkers.

A guide will lead you through the two underground floors with more than 50 rooms, some of which are in their original condition and now serve as a museum. Maps are available from the Heuvelland tourist office, we recommend that you make a reservation.

Discovering the Kemmel Command Bunker: a MUST, also for you!

In the early 1950s, in the midst of the Cold War, Belgium, France, Great Britain, Luxembourg and the Netherlands built a coordination bunker for Western European air defense as part of the Brussels Pact. When the bunker is finally ready, the newly established NATO will install its own system and the bunker in Kemmel will be left unused. It was not until 1963 that the High Command of the Belgian armed forces decided to use the bunker as a headquarters in case of war, conflict or exercise.

A visit to the Kemmel Command Bunker is a top experience for everyone. Young or old, alone or in a group: here you really get a feel for military history. The command bunker is a historically valuable site and a rare testimony to the Cold War in Belgium. A visit to the bunker is a fascinating experience. For over an hour and a half you will dive into the belly of the Kemmelberg: a site full of secret missions, invisible enemies and an ubiquitous tension that leaves no one unmoved. Just walking around in the 'Operations Rooms' - the beating heart of the bunker - is an impressive experience.
