The academic garden was not designed for representational purposes, but for teaching. The plan from 1783 drawn by the gardener Veit Bertele shows this very clearly: the garden was structured like a kitchen garden, with simple rectangular beds. As in a tabular overview, the plants were arranged here according to the applicable botanical system. The potted plants, which were not frost-hardy, were initially overwintered on the ground floor of the anatomy building, and later a glass house was built in which exotic plants could also be cultivated.
