The ascent to Pico de Veleta from Hoya de la Mora plunges you into a landscape that transforms from initial vegetation to an arid, almost lunar terrain, offering spectacular views of the Sierra Nevada. As you cycle, the air becomes cooler and the silence deeper, broken only by the wind and, perhaps, the sighting of a mountain goat near the summit. It's a touring cycling experience that connects you directly with the immensity of the mountains.
This 14.7-mile (23.6 km) route with 2893 feet (882 metres) of elevation gain is a difficult challenge that will take you around 2 hours and 7 minutes. The starting point in Hoya de la Mora is crucial, as it marks the beginning of Europe's highest road section, with the final stretch towards Pico del Veleta becoming steeper and gravelly. Make sure to carry enough hydration and be prepared for sudden temperature changes.
Pico de Veleta is famous for being Europe's highest paved road, reaching 3,398 metres above sea level. Beyond Hoya de la Mora, the road is closed to motorized traffic, making it a sanctuary for cyclists and hikers. The 360-degree views from the summit, spanning from Granada to the Mediterranean and Africa on clear days, make every pedal stroke worthwhile.
