Calderón Hondo belongs to the Montaña Colorada - Bayuyo volcano series, which consists of nine volcanic cauldrons. Due to the volcanic activity of this area and the volcanic assemblage in the north, the island of Fuerteventura once gained an area of approx. 110 km² in the north.
The Calderón Hondo was characterized by its explosive volcanic activity. Its bowl-shaped crater is 70 m deep and connected to the Montaña Colorada mountain on the north-eastern side.
