There has been a water management church at the location where the St. Boniface Church was built since 1819. This gave the predominantly Roman Catholic population of Lichtenvoorde its own Roman Catholic church again. The church was replaced in the early 20th century by the St. Boniface Church, which offered more space. The consecration of the church took place on August 26, 1913 by Archbishop of the Diocese of Utrecht Henricus van de Wetering.
