The church, which resembles a basilica with many outbuildings, a bell tower and a minaret, was built using elements from Apollonia, including a male bust from the 1st-2nd century AD. This sculpture from Apollonia was installed on the wall of the church of St. Dimitri. In 1922, the church was declared a cathedral, but was later destroyed during the communist period and replaced by the party committee.
