The exact year the half-timbered synagogue was built is not known, but it is first mentioned in a list of houses from 1818. It was used as a prayer house until the November pogrom of 1938, after which it was forcibly sold and used as a coal store. Demolition was prevented because the building was added to the list of historic monuments. Renovation of the synagogue began in 1991 and it was reopened to the public in 1994. It has been used by the Etz Ami Jewish community since 2000. The rarity of synagogue buildings from the early 19th century that are still preserved in Westphalia contributes to the monument value of this synagogue.

The synagogue is one of the few rural synagogues still in existence in the Münsterland. What is certain is that the synagogue building is already listed in the house register from 1818 and in the original cadastre of Bork from 1824. For more than 100 years, the building served as the center of the Jewish community in Bork and Selm, which comprised around eleven families and around 60 members. With the "seizure of power" by the National Socialists, they were increasingly discriminated against and excluded from the village community.
