Hannibal conquered 217 BC. this settlement and it became an important trading city. The impressive Puente Romano still bears witness to this time. In the early 13th c. Spain's first university was founded here. She had already in the 16th century. 12000 students (Madrid did not even have 30000 inhabitants at that time). Spain's national poet, Miguel de Cevantes, also studied here. The main facade is one of the finest examples of the so-called. Plateresque style. Students often stand here and look for the little frog on the skull in the facade. If they find it in the stray variety of ornaments, they should be lucky and pass their exam. You can stroll around the magnificent Plaza Mayor with its arcades and stand in amazement in front of the Casa de las Conchas and count the 300 scallop shells worked into the facade. This city fascinated us for three days.
