St. John's Church, located in the heart of Uslar's old town, dates from three eras: the west wall of the tower contains the remains of the original Romanesque church; the high choir towering over the nave dates from the era when Uslar was the residence of the Guelph Duke Otto the One-Eyed. The foundation stone was laid on May 20, 1428. From then on, there were no funds to complete a large Gothic church. Since the old Romanesque building was unsuitable as a sermon church, a spacious nave was built on the high choir in 1845 according to the plans of Georg Ludwig Friedrich Laves, who was born in Uslar. The most recent interior renovation of the church took place in 1990/91.
