The Church of San Lorenzo is located in the town of Peñacastillo (Santander). It is a work of the architect Alfredo de la Escalera Amblard (1847-1928) and was inaugurated in 1897.

It has a beautiful view and it is very well recognized from afar, it is very lucid and aesthetically very beautiful next to the rock of Peñacastillo. Of course, when approaching you notice that it needs an urgent coat of paint because it is very tarnished.

Saint Lawrence (San Lorenzo), to whom this church in Penacastillo is dedicated, is one of the early Christian martyrs from a time when Christianity was still forbidden. He was Archdeacon of the Pope and asked by the pagan emperor to hand over the treasure of the Church. Laurentius asked for three days' time, in the meantime he distributed the church property among the poor inhabitants of Rome and, after the agreed time, came with the poor to the emperor in order to present them to him as the church's treasure. He was then martyred to death, legend has it that he was alive on a grate - this attribute can be seen in many depictions of Saint Laurentius - roasted over coals. He is said to have been in good spirits and told his executioner on the one hand he was ready, whether he didn't want to turn him over.
The commemoration of San Lorenzo in the calendar of saints is August 10th.

Beautiful hike on the Camino del Norte. The paths are each marked with yellow arrows or on the ground with the typical Camino shell. This path leads along a railway track. The path is wide enough to avoid a train. This path is officially forbidden, but all pilgrims followed this path, so at their own risk. Alternatively, take the train for one stop. There are various hostels for pilgrims or possibly hotels. I chose Hotel. Overnight in Santillana del Mar at Hotel Colonial. Hotel recommended, right on the Way of St. James.
