A large number of smaller and larger areas in the Upper Treene landscape, such as heaths, dry grasslands, moors and renaturalized gravel pits, are grazed all year round by a herd of wandering sheep. The animals ensure that the areas are not overgrown by young trees. This preserves locations for rare plants that need light. Unlike with paddock farming, specific characteristics and requirements of the pastures can be taken into account in a very targeted manner. The herd consists of over 200 white horned Heidschnucken, goats and a donkey.
The herd spends most of the nights and the lambing season in the sheep pen. This protects the animals from the weather and the nutrients in the droppings do not get into the soil and groundwater. The Schrobach Foundation had the 1,000 square meter sheep pen built on the southwest edge of the Fröruper Mountains especially for this purpose.
