From 1896 to 1922, a steam-powered cable car ran from the Leoni steamer dock to the Hotel Rottmannshöhe. Fifteen minutes was needed for the 880 meter long route. A height difference of 91 meters was overcome. Two open wagons could carry up to 30 people. Passengers had to pay 30 pfennigs for the ascent and 10 pfennigs for the descent.

The local press reported on September 8, 1896: "Leoni reports that the cable car to the Rottmannshöhe went into operation on Saturday and was now open to public traffic. The following Sunday saw extremely brisk, numerous traffic." People came in droves by train from Munich to Starnberg, where they changed to one of the steamers and then took the cable car. Truly an excursion experience for that time. Leoni

On the Rottmannshöhe you had an excellent view over the lake to the Alps from a lookout tower. The observation tower was demolished in 1922. The cable car stopped operating in the same year.

The rush of visitors did not materialize during the First World War and the years that followed. The Hotel Rottmannshöhe has meanwhile become a sanatorium.

A few rail remnants on the way to Rottmannshöhe and a signpost at the garage of the forest café in Assenhausen are still reminiscent of the former attractions of the place.
