The venerable Benedictine abbey of MARIA LAACH, very picturesquely situated on the banks of Lake Laach, is without a doubt one of the great highlights of this region. In addition to the extremely impressive Romanesque monastery church, where the monks meet several times a day for communal prayer (visitors are welcome to join in the prayers), there are restaurants, a book and art shop, a garden center and other businesses. Many visitors combine a tour of the abbey with a hike on or around the lake.

The Benedictine Abbey of Maria Laach is located in one of the youngest landscapes in Europe, the Volcanic Eifel. Around 10,000 BC, volcanism created Lake Laach and the chain of hills surrounding it. One of the special sights of Maria Laach Abbey is the monastery church with its founder's tomb from the 13th century, which is considered to be one of the most perfect creations of the Romanesque period. The three-aisled basilica has two choirs, the east and west choir. They each have two towers. The "paradise" of the church is an almost square atrium. The stonemasonry and the late Romanesque canopy above the altar are attributed to the so-called Samson Master. The abbey also includes a bookshop, a hotel, as well as craft and agricultural businesses and a garden center. History of the Abbey:
In 1093, Count Palatine Henry II of Laach founded the monastery, in 1112 Count Palatine Siegfried of Ballenstedt confirmed the foundation and handed it over
