"Built 1915 - 1931 as a Lippe side canal on the southern slope of the river trough in its lower course. The Lippe was relocated in two places, e.g. in Dorsten.

As one of the most important and busiest shipping canals in Germany, the WDK overcomes a height difference of around 41 m in 6 canal levels over a length of 60 km.

Each stage initially had a lock 225m long and 12m wide. Since 1970, a second lock chamber, 110 m long and 12 m wide, has been added everywhere.

since the calculated capacity of the canal had already been reached in 1953.

In 1992/93 the lifting gates had to be replaced in all large locks because the steel quality of the old structures no longer met the requirements.

The original canal profile no longer met the increased traffic and technical requirements and had to be significantly expanded.

The corresponding expansion of the route took place between 1966 and 1990. Since then, large pushed convoys have also been able to navigate the canal."
