The church of San Leonardo was built in the 11th century by the heads of families of the village of Montetiffi on the top of the cliff where a previous place of worship was probably located; hypothesis supported by the fact that various decorative elements inside appear to have been reused by different constructions. A few years after its construction, the church was donated to the Benedictine Order, thus becoming part of an abbey thanks to the extension on the south side of the cliff.
