Fun to tell the children:
In the 13th and 14th century, there was a notorious robber knight's castle here. The most famous resident was Sweder van Heeckeren, a real robber knight. Everyone in the area had to watch out for him. He undertook raids in the wide region and would not let himself be stopped easily. In 1361, the cities of Zwolle, Kampen and Deventer had had enough. They wanted to put an end to his plundering raids. But Sweder did not give up easily, he struck back hard and even set fire to the suburbs of Zwolle.

The castle is not only beautiful to look at but also of historical importance: it is the only medieval castle in Overijssel, from which important parts have been preserved. The approximately 35-meter-high residential towers and the living area can be dated back to the 14th century.
