Sortland on the Vesterålen archipelago is surrounded by hundreds of islands in a fantastic archipelago. Sortland has a population of 10,000 and is a rapidly developing regional centre. It is one of the few urban centers in Northern Norway that has experienced population growth in recent years.

Sortland is also known as the "Blue City" and has attracted national and international attention. It all started as part of the celebrations for the new millennium. Sortland came up with the idea of painting the town blue. This was the beginning of a dynamic process involving not only local artists but also the general public.
