Tips

  • The Destiny Fountain is a fountain in the Upper Palace Garden in Stuttgart. It was designed in Art Nouveau style in 1914 by the sculptor Karl Donndorf (1870–1941) and is considered one of the most important fountains of this style in Germany.
Karl Donndorf, together with the sculptors Richard and Willy Schönfeld, created this fountain in memory of the German-Swiss opera singer Anna Sutter, who was murdered in 1910 by a previous lover. The fountain was erected in 1914 at the artists' entrance of what was then the Württemberg State Opera (now the opera house of the State Theater in Stuttgart), which was located on what was then Neckarstrasse (today this section of the street is called Konrad-Adenauer-Strasse).
In 1963, the Destiny Fountain was moved to the other side of the building to its current location in the Upper Castle Garden between the opera and theater. The maintenance and operation of the fountain are financed by the city of Stuttgart, the Stuttgarter Brünnele Foundation and so-called fountain sponsors. It normally operates from around mid-May to mid-September.
The theme of the fountain is the changeable fate that confronts people with joy and sorrow both as stage characters and in real life. The fountain is designed in a semicircle, in the middle of which sits the goddess of fate with outstretched arms. In her closed hands she keeps the fate of the people hidden. Two lovers stand to the right and left of the goddess at the ends of the semicircle, symbolizing joy and sorrow.
