Limestone pavement forms on a sea floor where the build-up of sea creatures and shells get crushed and squashed into rock over millions of years. The layers of limestone that form is eventually exposed due to the erosion of the overlying sediment. In the case of most Yorkshire pavement this was during the last ice age where the ice bulldozed the sediment off the harder limestone. The top of the limestone is then exposed and starts to weather forming the distinctive cracks. Over time these grow and become populated with niche wildlife and fauna as we see today.
The pavement above Malham Cove is a great example and fun to run across!
