The new main church in Kristiansund, the Reconstruction Church, was built in 1964. At this point, Kirklandet had been without a Church for 24 years. The large wooden church that stood on Kirketomta before the war became a predator of the flames after the terrorist bombing in April 1940.
Until the Reconstruction Church was completed, Nordlandet Church served as the town's main church, and some other premises were also used as temporary church buildings.
It was architect Odd Østby who won the announced architectural competition for a new main church in 1958. The name of the winning design was Bergkrystall in Rosen. Both the location of the church and, last but not least, the architecture have long been the subject of much discussion in the city.
Kirkelandet Church marked an innovation in Norwegian church buildings in many ways and has achieved a distinctive position in post-war architecture.
