Rahden Castle ruins, once a moated castle with a mighty moat, look back on over 570 years of history, and their remaining walls hint at the former grandeur of the complex. Here you can discover parts of the former castle as well as the well-preserved coat of arms of the von dem Bussche family, who played a significant role in the late 14th century. Nestled in the charming landscape of the Minden-Lübbecke district, the historic ruins invite you to a fascinating break amidst nature and the past.

Originally, the castle formed a substantial complex of buildings surrounded by a mighty moat. The main building was the palace, which still bears the (heavily weathered) coat of arms of the Bussche family on its rear. They held the castle as a pledge from 1391 to 1395. The ruin is therefore over 570 years old. A wing of the palace stood on the north side, its upper floors constructed using half-timbered framing. The supports of the roof structure still protrude from the masonry. The rear facade consisted of the long, narrow stables, to which the gatehouse (to the south) was attached at a right angle. A connecting building stood between the gatehouse and the palace. A massive keep, which covered the front of the main building, leaned against it. Towers also controlled the north and south sides. Access to the castle was via a causeway leading from Lemförder Straße to the south. The drawbridge was also located here. The building complex measured approximately 63 x 53 meters. The extent of the site was determined in 1969 through exploratory excavations and marked by boulders to the south (the museum grounds) and north (the local history park). In 1649, after the Peace of Westphalia, the castle became the property of Brandenburg. Even during the time of the bishops, it served primarily as an estate farm for agricultural purposes. In 1647, 59 head of cattle and 318 sheep were kept there.
