The Bockwitz nature reserve is a structurally rich biotope mosaic and is therefore one of the most valuable areas of the post-mining landscape. With an area of around 545 hectares, it is also one of the largest nature reserves in Saxony.

However, not only the size makes this area an important locality, but also its record-breaking biodiversity. Thanks to the diverse landscape, characterized by residual lakes, small bodies of water, swamp zones, grass and herb meadows, 400 different plant species grow here alone. But 180 bird species, 12 amphibian species, 4 reptile species, 31 dragonfly species and 20 grasshopper species were also counted. Rarely is there such a great variety of species as in this place.

Lake Bockwitz was created as a post-mining landscape near Borna south of Leipzig from the former lignite opencast mine Borna-Ost/Bockwitz, which was flooded from 1993 to 2005 by rising groundwater. The lake was named after the devastated Gut Bockwitz.
