The lighthouse was built on the northwest corner of the island of Fehmarn, behind the dike, and shows shipping as an orientation and warning light the way to the Fehmarnbelt. There are other shipping and meteorological facilities next door.

"Completion is planned for mid-December," said Lars Fokuhl, construction technician at the Waterways and Shipping Office (WSA) Lübeck, the FT. "Then the regular operation of the beacon will take place from the new lighthouse," said the expert from the Hanseatic city. The WSA builds, operates and maintains the lighthouses.
