The 2nd lighthouse on the island tour 😊
Westermarkelsdorf lighthouse
The lighthouse was built on the northwest corner of the island of Fehmarn, behind the dike, and shows shipping as an orientation and warning light the way to the Fehmarnbelt. There are other shipping and meteorological facilities next door.

The lighthouse Westermarkelsdorf, in the northwest on the coast of Fehmarn, was built in 1881/82 and towers over the sea level only about 17 meters. It serves shipping as an orientation and warning fire for the way from the west in the Fehmarnbelt. The bike path leads past the dike at the lighthouse, a fantastic route, especially in the afternoon hours. The lighthouse is not accessible to the public.

There are almost 50 active and inactive lighthouses, the oldest is in Travemünde, between Flensburg and Usedom. There are five copies on Fehmarn, in Marienuchter, Staberhuk, Strukkamphuk, Flügge and Westermarkelsdorf - that should change soon, because a new tower is currently being built in Westermarkelsdorf, right next to the previous brick building, which is a listed building.
While the old tower rises 17.7 meters, the new one will measure 26 meters. "Completion is planned for mid-December," said Lars Fokuhl, construction technician at the Waterways and Shipping Office (WSA) Lübeck, the FT. "Then the regular operation of the beacon will take place from the new lighthouse," said the expert from the Hanseatic city. The WSA builds, operates and maintains the lighthouses.
