Another set of cannons that were part of the naval defense of the early twentieth century. Today you can visit and see the canyons of more than 17 m in length, some impressive artifacts that stand out even more in the beautiful landscape and the beautiful views from the top of the Cabezo del Atalayón.

The anti-aircraft artillery emplacement of the Atalayón was built as a result of the 1926 defense plan, which envisaged significant modernization of the defenses of the Plaza de Cartagena and its naval base. Thus a series of powerful batteries were established on the coast, which had a point where the antiaircraft covering them was mounted. For example, the Atalayón, with its 105 mm pieces, covered the batteries of Castillitos and El Jorel against possible attack by enemy aircraft. It dominates a vast coastal area stretching from the island of Escombreras to Puerto de Mazarrón.

Like all artillery sites around it, and as a battered testimony to our history, the Battery of the Atalayón is declared a Property of Cultural Interest by the second additional provision of Law 16/1985, of June 25, of the Spanish Historical Heritage.

To reach this enclave of Cartagena's fortifications, there is a detour, towards the Campillo de Adentro, part of the road that connects the urban center of Cartagena and the coastal town of La Azohía. Shortly before reaching it, and after passing the slopes of the Cedadero. From there along the old military road that goes to Castillitos. And shortly before reaching the guard corps of this battery, an unpaved track begins which, after descending a slope of more than a hundred meters, reaches the Atalayón.

The Battery Atalayón is there at the highest point. The climb is worth it just because of the view.
