Alternative route through to Mamaku (and on to Rotorua) avoiding SH5. Route is not suitable for road bikes, gravel, mountain bikes preferred and road touring bikes can negotiate it. Mixed surface of pave, light gravel and larger gravel aggregate. There is no water available through the forest.

Road cycling

Jan 23: About halfway up a local warned us not to take this road. We continued anyways and found everything as described by Mark. The road goes through private land but the gates were open and the road was absolutely rideable with our touring bikes (38mm). Some sections are a bit bumby, there is some coarse gravel and we were therefore quite slow, but absolutely manageable. I would certainly prefer this road over the highway.
