Best Hikes to Stone Crane of Santander

Tips

  • An iconic crane, erected on the La Monja wharf and now located next to the Botín Center in Santander, its profile reminds us of the city's port past. The Stone Crane was built in 1896 and 1900 by Sheldon and Gerdtzen as a result of a plan to improve the North Coast of Santander Bay. It is a crane weighing t30 tons and fourteen meters high, it is built with the best quality steel of the time. In its rear part it has some counterweights with a weight of 34 tons. The entire structure of the crane rests on a base built from reused ashlars from the old docks of the city, its total weight without counting this part of stone being 48 tons.
