The Beerze is one of the most characteristic streams in Central Brabant. Originally, it was a slow-flowing, strongly meandering sandy stream with wide, wet valleys, fens, marshlands, and swampy areas. In the 20th century, the Beerze was straightened in many places to drain water more quickly, but this also resulted in the disappearance of the natural bends, the marshy areas, and the habitat for many plants and animals.

A major restoration project began in the 1990s: the old meanders were re-excavated, the stream was given room to meander again, and the water level was raised so that the wet meadows and fen areas could recover. As a result, the Beerze valley is once again a diverse landscape of open water, marsh vegetation, scrub, reed beds, and damp grasslands.

The Beerze now forms an important ecological corridor through the region, where fish, amphibians, dragonflies, and marsh birds benefit from the restored flow and riparian zones. The reed banks are periodically maintained to prevent overgrowth, but otherwise the stream is largely allowed to function naturally.

For hikers, the Beerze is one of those tranquil spots where you can clearly see what a traditional Brabant stream originally looked like: winding, wet, open, and strongly influenced by groundwater and natural dynamics.
