The Dornoch Firth Bridge was opened by the Queen Mother in 1991 and carries the A9 trunk road north from Tain saving a 26-mile (42 km) detour via Bonar Bridge. The bridge has a sleek low-profile and comprises 21 spans each about 44 m long.

The Bridge length is about 1 km but the approaches at each end of the bridge make the total walking distance to cross the bridge about 3.3 km (2 miles). The 1 km bridge length has good concrete footpaths on each side of the road. However, the two bridge approaches lack a proper footpath and here you will need to walk either on the side of the road or on loose stones between the road and a barrier.

Although the A9 is often busy with traffic, the 3.3 km walk gives fine views – especially inland to the west. Crossing the bridge can be exhilarating but the thundering noise from large lorries passing nearby can be unpleasant.
