Originally this Shrine was entitled "Visitation of Mary to Santa Elisabetta del Bosco", then later it was called "Shrine of the Virgin Mary of the Wood or of the Olive Tree".

Today it is known as the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Monte Perello. This sanctuary stands on the place where tradition has it that the Madonna appeared to a farmer from Sambusita, who was in this place mowing lean hay.

That of Perello is one of the seventy Bergamo sanctuaries and chronologically it is the second apparition, after that which took place at Basella di Urgnano (BG) in 1356, canonically ascertained and approved in the diocese of Bergamo.

Built on Mount Perello, at a height of 890 m a.s.l., on a plane obtained from the mountain, it was once only reachable on foot, through mule tracks and only towards the end of the twentieth century was a road built that reaches the square in front of the Sanctuary itself. .

The Apparition took place on 2 July 1413, once the feast of the Visitation; the farmer Ruggero Gianforte de Grigis from Rigosa was intent on mowing lean hay on the clearings of Mount Perello, when the Madonna appeared and asked Ruggero to tell his fellow villagers that she wanted a church built in his honor, in veneration of the infallible mystery of the visit to St. Elizabeth.

To confirm the apparition and indicate the place where the church was to be built, the Madonna gave birth to an olive branch from a beech stump.

Along the road that leads to the Sanctuary of Perello you come across this very small church, which looks more like a votive shrine.

Despite being half hidden by vegetation, as often happens, small is also very beautiful!
