After the outbreak of the September campaign, the Institute was evacuated via Lviv to France, where it was reactivated, and after its fall, to Great Britain. Initially, it was located in London, and then it was transferred to Edinburgh, Scotland, where it existed until 1946. WIG officers prepared maps for the Polish army fighting in the West and for the British intelligence (maps of Polish cities). Some of them, taken prisoner after the USSR's aggression against Poland on September 17, 1939, were murdered in Katyn, and some went to the Polish People's Army.
