In the village square Großgörschen, Kleingörschen, Raja and Kaja between Lützen and Pegau, about 145,000 soldiers of Napoleon and 88,000 allied Prussians and Russians meet on 2 May 1813 for the first battle of the "wars of liberation". In the course of the battle, the villages mentioned change hands several times. Only in the evening succeed the outnumbered Frenchmen to gain the upper hand. Prussians and Russians clear the battlefield and retreat to Dresden. After the annihilation of his "Grande Armeé" in Russia in 1812, Napoleon again achieved a victory for the first time. Some 34,000 soldiers lose their lives on the battlefield.
