The lake is suitable for swimming and its pure waters are a favorite destination for water sports enthusiasts such as canoeing, kayaking, windsurfing.
Originally it was part of Lake Maggiore which was higher and more extensive than the current one.
In remote centuries the continuous floods of the Toce river created a delta dam, the current plain of Fondotoce, which divides the two lakes.
