As early as 1198, a document said that the Bishop of Raab gave the Cistercians in St. Gotthard a "holy spring" including the local chapel with a vineyard. This spring gave the place "Heiligenbrunn" its name. It is still located today below the parish church, at the foot of a small chapel dedicated to St. Ulrich. When a "holy" spring is reported as early as 1198, this indicates that the water has a healing effect. Centuries later, in the canonical visitation of 1757, it is said that many people who are afflicted by disease will recover after being washed with the water of the spring.
