The Antarktis was a Norwegian boat, hunter and producer of whale oil, bought by the Germans in 1939 and converted into an oil tanker on the eve of the war. It was one of nine ships that German troops sank in front of the Pellerin in 1944, in order to protect their retreat and block access to Nantes by the river.
If the other eight ships could be refloated, the Antarktis could not be and was buried under the river. Even today, from this place, its masts can be seen emerging from the water.
