"A city with water is always beautiful," wrote Kurt Tucholsky in his summer story Gripsholm Castle. So he would have liked Lohnde, because Lohnde has a lot to offer in this respect. Bounded to the north by the Leine from time immemorial (to be crossed on a reinforced concrete bridge instead of the former farmer's ferry since 1914), the village gained considerable water surface area in 1916 with the Mittelland Canal and its southern branch. The Lohnder call the point where the main and branch canals meet the "Lohnder Meer".
