The specialty of the "Asselbachtal bei Wißmar" lies in the diversity of the area. It consists of a small-scale mosaic of numerous habitat types and plant communities that are in decline, such as wet grassland along rivers, sedge-ried communities, bushes and old tree populations.
A multitude of endangered animal and plant species, such as rare butterflies and orchids, occur within this mosaic, which underline the value of the NSG.
